Puella Magi Madoka Magica first aired as an animated TV series in January 2011 and caught the attention of the world. Director Akiyuki Shimbou, screenwriter Gen Urobuchi (Nitroplus), and character designer aokiume created a universe which depicted the daily lives of cute middle school girls, their unpredictable and thrilling adventures, and a world where teen girls and magical girls live together.
Featuring cutting edge creators including Shaft, the animation production team that worked on the expressive imagery, the parallel world designers Gekidan Inucurry, who created the avant-garde visuals, and Yuki Kaijura, who composed the dramatic background music, Puella Magi Madoka Magica received widespread critical acclaim.
The two theatrical adaptations of the TV series, Part 1: Beginnings and Part 2: Eternal, were released in 2012, followed by Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie -Rebellion- in 2013, which told a brand new tale. Rebellion was the first film adaptation of a late-night animated TV series to gross over twenty billion yen at the box office.

“I’ll never forget the excitement of going to the SHAFT meeting room while I was writing the screenplay.”
Looking back ten years ago, a lot of groundbreaking things were happening, every bit as much as when the full-scale Gundam that was once standing still finally started moving. It’s getting harder to remember what those times were like, back when we didn’t have gacha games on our smartphones or Uber Eats. But I’ll never forget the excitement of going to the SHAFT meeting room while I was writing the screenplay. I’m so happy that our hard work still hasn’t been forgotten and that we’re able to celebrate the tenth anniversary of this project.

“Both myself and my staff can’t believe that ten years have already gone by, but we remember what it was like working on this project as if it were yesterday.”
In January 2011, before the show aired, we were feeling a mixture of excitement and anxiety. Both myself and my staff can’t believe that ten years have already gone by, but we remember what it was like working on this project as if it were yesterday. It was a privilege working on this original animation, and I sometimes still think to myself, “Could I have made that scene or character better?”
I’m also very grateful to all the fans who made it so rewarding to work on this project!!

“I would be overjoyed if Puella Magi Madoka Magica continued to live in your hearts.”
Thank you so much for continuing to love Puella Magi Madoka Magica for the past ten years. The joy I felt when I first met Madoka ten years ago and the emotions I felt while I was playing this character have been a constant source of energy for me, and have made me who I am today.
Now that I’m an adult, I wonder if watching this anime again will bring about new emotions? Saying this is making me want to watch it again.
I would be overjoyed if Puella Magi Madoka Magica continued to live in your hearts.
